Healthy Mouth, Healthy Body

For some time now dental professionals have known that there is a link between the health of our mouths, and the health of our body in general. As more time passes and more research continues that link is becoming stronger and better understood.

Many people may not be aware however, that oral infections can trigger a response in the immune system, causing inflammation in other parts of the body which can ultimately contribute to heart disease. In fact, research suggests that oral inflammation and infection can raise the risk of heart attack by up to thirteen times. This is almost twice the risk compared to someone who is a heavy smoker!

How does this happen? Gum disease is a bacterial infection that can affect conditions outside your mouth. When gum disease is present in a person with heart disease, bacteria from the gums can enter the bloodstream where they attach to the fatty deposits in their heart blood vessels. This condition can cause blood clots and may lead to heart attack or stroke.

Good oral health is integral to general health, and complications such as this can be reduced by being proactive about your oral health.  Reducing bacteria, both above and below the gum line, helps to protect yourself from developing a connection between oral health and heart disease, as well as keeping your smile healthy.

Maintaining excellent home care, including flossing regularly and brushing twice daily with a toothpaste that offers antibacterial protection is essential to achieving good oral health. When these good habits at home are supported by having regular Active Maintenance appointments with Medland Dental’s gentle Dentists and Hygienists, the risk of these complications will decrease.

At Medland Dental out patient’s health, be it dental health or general health is our highest priority.  If you would like further information on this topic, or would like to schedule an appointment for your examination and professional cleaning please call on 3426 5777 or email us.
