Sleep Aponea Treatment Brisbane QLD

Sleep Apnoea Treatment

Peaceful, quiet and comfortable sleep.

Enjoy a refreshing night’s sleep and relief from snoring and mild-moderate sleep apnoea with a safe and effective dental device.

If you or someone close to you suffers from snoring or has been diagnosed with mild-moderate sleep apnoea,  a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) like SomnoDent® Avant™ may be the answer.

A Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) fits over your top and bottom teeth like a very slim mouthguard. If you are a suitable candidate, it works by positioning your bottom jaw slightly forward of its usual position, thereby opening the airway and treating snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Your Medland dentist will carefully examine your suitability for the MAS, often in conjunction with your sleep physician. If you don’t have a sleep doctor or haven’t had a sleep study, that is something we can guide you through too.  We will then take scans and measurements, prepare the device and provide you with detailed instructions on its use.

You’re potentially one step away from a good night’s sleep!

Sleep Apnoea Treatment FAQs

Below are some of the frequently asked questions we receive regarding our sleep apnoea treatment services at Medland Dental.

If you have any other questions please contact our friendly team.

In the case of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), as the muscles of the body relax during sleep, the position of the jaw, tongue and the muscles and soft tissues in the neck and mouth narrow or block the airway opening. Not only does this narrowing of the airway cause snoring, but it can also then lead to a reduction of airflow or even stop the airflow altogether. Breathing can stop for 20-40 seconds at a time at which stage a signal is sent to the brain to wake up! The person gasps for breath, falls asleep again, starts snoring and the cycle continues.

A person with sleep apnoea may have hundreds of these episodes each evening, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the brain and the body’s vital organs, as well as disrupted sleep. Sufferers of OSA are at a significantly higher risk of general medical problems like high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes, stroke and obesity.

If the patient is deemed suitable, a MAS can be worn at night to advance the lower jaw to a more forward position. This forward position of the jaw correspondingly brings the tongue and other soft tissues forward and away from the throat, keeping the airway open.

The type of MAS (eg Somnodent Avant) that is prescribed by Medland dentists is designed and made in Australia to suit each specific patient. There is an overwhelming amount of evidence to support the case for MAS in terms of its effectiveness for treating mild-moderate sleep apnoea and snoring.  If you have decided CPAP is not for you, and you have mild-moderate OSA or snoring, a Mandibular Advancement splint (eg Somnodent Avant) might be the solution for you.

It is highly recommended that you have a sleep study to diagnose if obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is present, its severity and to ensure it is treated appropriately.

Sufferers of OSA are at a significantly higher risk of general medical problems like high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes, stroke and obesity so it is important that it is managed effectively and a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) apparatus might be recommended instead.

Patients with a bridge or denture can successfully use a MAS. We will make additional adjustments to ensure it works perfectly with your existing devices.

Patients with partial dentures may be successfully fitted with a MAS if there are enough teeth to anchor the device.

During your biannual dental examination, your Medland Dentist will check the position of your MAS, clean it thoroughly and tighten the moveable parts to ensure its thorough working order.
