Replacement of missing teeth FAQs
Below are some of the frequently asked questions we receive regarding replacing missing teeth.
If you have any other questions please contact our friendly team.
For conventional bridges, one tooth on each side of the missing tooth is prepared for a crown. The replacement tooth (pontic) is fused to the crowns and then the bridge is cemented in place. Effectively, the replacement tooth is supported by crowns fixed to its neighbouring teeth. Like crowns, dental bridges may be fabricated from ceramic or ceramic fused to gold materials. Stressbreakers may be used to allow some independent movement of the support teeth and promote better longevity of the treatment.
In some situations, a bonded bridge may be used, especially when the missing tooth is a front tooth. This reduces the amount of tooth preparation of adjacent teeth and relies on a wing of ceramic or metal bonded to the adjacent tooth.
Dental implants are a very successful and accepted treatment option to replace lost or missing teeth. A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root which can be used to support several types of dental prostheses, such as crowns, bridges or dentures. The implant fixture, or artificial root, is commonly connected to a supporting structure by way of a screw that then supports the replacement tooth/teeth. The implant is constructed of a strong, biocompatible material called titanium which becomes integrated with the jaw bone – a process called osseo-integration.
If you have a single missing tooth, missing teeth or dentures, you may wish to consider dental implants to restore the full use of your teeth and to create a happy, confident smile.
Dentures can be a cost-effective replacement option for teeth lost due to conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease, or trauma. However, traditional dentures are the tooth or teeth replacement options that feel and function least like your natural teeth.
Implant retention of dentures gives greater benefits than traditional dentures and can dramatically improve the appearance, how you speak, eat and taste, as well as self-esteem and confidence.
Implant bridges can remove the need for dentures entirely, offering a replacement of your teeth, fixed in place much like natural teeth.
