Medland Crowns
Give damaged teeth a new lease on life at Medland
Crowns strengthen and restore natural teeth giving you increased confidence and more reasons to smile.
A dental crown is a restoration that embraces the natural tooth, supporting teeth that have been weakened by large fillings, cracks, trauma or root canal treatment. Crowns become the new surface of your tooth and protect the tooth underneath.
Your comfort is our highest priority and we are confident you will be happy with the results. Book your appointment at Medland today.

Dental Crowns FAQs
Below are some of the frequently asked questions we receive regarding crowns at Medland Dental.
If you have any other questions please contact our friendly team.
Your Medland Dentist will always recommend the most conservative and minimally invasive option for your tooth.
Composite restorations (also called fillings) are an excellent option and minimally invasive solution for small or moderate-sized restorations.
However, where destruction of the tooth structure is more extensive, there are cracks present or the tooth structure is weakened, a partial or full coverage crown may give the best long-term results and reduce your risks of pain or sudden breakage of your tooth.
A crown strengthens teeth in a similar way that a motorcycle helmet protects your head. A crown covers the entire surface like a hard shell, protecting your tooth from the damaging flexing forces of chewing. Crowns can be made of either gold, ceramic and gold or entirely of ceramic
Large fillings weaken the remaining tooth structure as the cusps flex and strain during chewing. This long-term stress damages the tooth causing the formation of fracture lines that will eventually propagate and result in breakages. Biting stress on fracture lines can cause the remaining shell of the tooth to break off completely from the filling. This can affect the nerve of the tooth, or may even happen in a manner that is unable to be repaired. Because of this risk, crowns are recommended in teeth that are heavily filled, especially those teeth that have fractured or have crack lines visible.
The placement of a crown reduces the risks associated with tooth breakage by bracing the fractures, fillings and remaining natural tooth together. A crown prevents the tooth from breaking through these fracture lines and seals off the fracture lines from bacterial entry. As such a crown reduces the risk that a root canal treatment will be necessitated, however, it does not eliminate the risk entirely.
Crowns can be made of either gold, ceramic and gold or entirely of ceramic. There are also different types of ceramic crowns available. There is no “one size fits all” solution when it comes to crowns as every person is unique, and their mouth a unique environment.
“Same day crowns” (often referred to under the brand of CEREC crowns) are promoted as a means of getting a crown completed quickly, while you wait, and not requiring a temporary crown. The crown is made by an in-house machine, which mills the crown out of a block of ceramic while you wait.
Let’s face it, no one loves a temporary crown, however, at Medland we pride ourselves on technical excellence and exceptional outcomes. Using a combination of state-of-the-art technology in combination with meticulous handcrafting by on-site technicians and ceramist means that a Medland crown will fit perfectly, feel comfortable, and have all of the characteristics to look like a natural tooth (and not “like a crown”). It also means that we can choose the type of crown material that is best suited to your tooth and the environment in your mouth. We are not restricted to one material option like CEREC, so we can choose the material that will have the best longevity and outcome for you.
The type of crown that is right for your tooth will be decided in consultation with you and will take into consideration many factors like chewing forces, parafunction (clenching and grinding), natural occlusion, the colour of the tooth and the amount of damage to the tooth.
Your Medland crown not only be a perfect fit, but a perfect fit for you, personalised to your needs and your tooth’s functional and aesthetic needs. Good things take time, and your crown will be created for you by our on-site dental technicians and ceramists using a combination of the best technology and detailed handcrafting. A Medland crown will look indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
Whether or not you have a physical impression or a digital scan depends not only on the type of crown but where the margins of your crown are located. Let’s face it, no one loves impressions, but there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to dental impressions or digital scans. Your Medland Dentist will also undertake the technique that is going to give you and your tooth the best outcome and ensure that your crown fits perfectly. If the best outcome will come from a physical impression, and you are anxious about impressions, your Medland dentist and their team are highly skilled at impression techniques that will make the process as comfortable as possible.
The provision of a Medland crown is generally a two-appointment process. Prior to this appointment, your Medland dentist may take an x-ray to further assess the health of your tooth and anything you need to know about the long-term health of your tooth.
Appointment 1: During this appointment, your Medland dentist will make you comfortable and ensure that the tooth and surrounding gum are thoroughly anaesthetised. The tooth will be prepared for a crown and a very fine detailed impression (either physical impression or a digital scan) of the prepared tooth will be taken on which our on-site laboratory technicians or ceramists will construct your crown. One of our laboratory technicians will consult with you and your Medland dentist during this appointment to ensure that your new crown will be the ideal colour and shade for your mouth. At the end of the appointment, a temporary crown will be placed on your prepared tooth to protect it until your next appointment.
Appointment 2: Your Medland dentist will once again ensure that your tooth and surrounding gum is thoroughly anaesthetised. Your new crown will be tried on your tooth and the colour, shape, fit and bite checked. If any changes need to be made these can be made immediately in our on-site laboratory before cementing or bonding your crown.
Your new Medland crown requires the same care and attention as a natural tooth.
At Medland, we don’t just place your crowns, but partner with you in their care by providing you with ongoing reviews and most importantly, preventive care, so that your crowns retain their health and functional qualities for as long as possible.
Maintenance, repairs and replacements are inevitable for all dental treatments. The lifetime of any dental treatment can vary greatly between individuals as every person is unique, and their mouth a unique environment.
Some factors that can affect the life expectancy of your crowns are chewing forces, parafunction (clenching, grinding, fingernail biting), natural occlusion, diet, oral hygiene, and regularity of dental examinations and reviews.
With proper care and attention, your Medland crown should last for many years.
