When should my child see an oral health therapist, dentist or paediatric dentist?

It’s school holiday time again!

During the school holidays, we often welcome more of our school-age patients into the practice. At your child’s active maintenance appointment, their Dentist may discover that treatment is required or recommend preventive treatment for your child.

Have you ever wondered why your child is cared for by different members of our team for different appointments?

At Medland Dental, we pride ourselves on providing optimal treatment to our patients of all ages. There are several factors that we consider when deciding on the best course of action to take when caring for our youngest patients.  This includes determining which dental team member is the most appropriate for the planned treatment.

Treatment with a Medland Oral Health Therapist

Your Dentist may decide that the treatment can be provided by one of our fantastic Oral Health Therapists.  As well as being our prevention and gum disease gurus, our Oral Health Therapists are specially trained to provide dentistry for children.  Our Oral Health Therapists love treating children and have all gained many years of experience providing dental treatment exclusively for children.

Treatment with a Medland Dentist

It is common for some children to be apprehensive about having dental treatment.  Our focus is always on helping your child to have a positive dental experience.  Your dentist may offer to provide treatment with the aid of Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas).  This can help to reduce anxiousness, creating a better environment to carry out the optimal treatment. In this instance, your Dentist will complete your child’s treatment.

Referral to a Paediatric Dentist

Occasionally referral to a Paediatric Dentist may be required.  These dentists have completed a post-graduate degree, specialising in providing dentistry to children.  If a large amount of dental treatment is required or if your Dentist or Oral Health Therapist feels that cooperation may be limited, then they may feel that the best and safest option may be to have your child’s dental treatment carried out by a Paediatric dentist.  A Paediatric Dentist may complete dental treatment with the aid of a General Anaesthetic (GA) to ensure an optimal outcome.
