At Medland Dental, we’re passionate about partnering with our patients to support their oral health. August 2nd – 8th is Dental Health Week, and we are proud to join with the Australian Dental Association to raise awareness about the importance of good oral health in our patients’ lives.
It should not be a normal expectation that teeth will need to be removed at some stage of your life because of tooth decay or gum disease. Instead, Australians should expect to keep their teeth for their lifetime. In 2021, “Keep your smile for life” focuses on maintaining good oral health to help us to keep our teeth for life. After all, you do not expect to lose an arm or leg, so why expect to lose any of your teeth?
Tempting as it is to think that everyone is practising good teeth and mouth hygiene, the reality is that the oral health of many Australians is not where it should be.
The ADA regularly updates a report card for oral health in Australia known as “Australia’s Oral Health Tracker”. Data in the adult and child and youth versions provides both indicators of our nation’s current oral health status, and the targets that have been defined to improve Australia’s oral health and prevent or better manage resultant oral health-related chronic disease.
“Keep your smile for life” focuses on four key messages to help maintain good oral health:
- Twice daily toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste
- Daily cleaning between your teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes
- Eating a healthy, balanced diet and limited added sugar intake
- Regular dental visits for checkups and preventive dental care.
