Botulinum Toxin Type A is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. It works by temporarily reducing the ability of the targeted muscle to contract.
It has been used effectively for many years in Medicine and Dentistry for the treatment of TMD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction), bruxism, headaches associated with bruxism/TMD and masseter hypertrophy.
Botulinum Toxin Type A (e.g. Dysport®) can be extremely effective at treating pain associated with TMD and Bruxism, especially when used as an adjunct to occlusal splint therapy and physiotherapy. If you suffer from these conditions and there are no medical contra-indications to you having treatment (eg Neuromuscular transmission disorders), it may be perfectly suited to you.
The first step is making sure you are a suitable candidate for Botulinum Toxin. A consult appointment is necessary at which time the relevant consent forms are explained. The actual procedure involves injecting Botulinum Toxin A into the target muscles so some very slight discomfort, pain, bruising, swelling can be expected during and post-operatively.
The effects of Botulinum Toxin do wear off over time, lasting three to four months so follow-up treatment is often necessary to continue experiencing the beneficial effects of the procedure.
